Championship Season: A Busy Stretch for Calvin Knights Athletics
It鈥檚 a busy time of year in Calvin athletics as the winter and spring sports seasons intersect. As spring sports get underway, many of the winter sports teams are gearing up for their respective league and national tournaments. Stay up-to-date on all regular and postseason action at .
For now, here鈥檚 a brief summary of what to expect this week and in the weeks ahead:
Swimming and diving teams
The men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 swimming and diving teams wrapped up competition at the MIAA Championships February 18-21, taking second place in both the men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 competition. Senior Charles Platt was named the MIAA men鈥檚 Most Valuable Swimmer.
Calvin is expected to send a combined 14 swimmers (7 men and 7 women) to the NCAA III Championships March 18-21.
Calvin junior Veronica Skipper is competing this weekend at the NCAA III Diving Regional February 27 and 28 at Kalamazoo College. She鈥檚 trying to add to Calvin鈥檚 list of national qualifiers.
Basketball teams
The men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 basketball teams are competing in the MIAA Championships February 24-28. Both teams are defending league tournament champions. Trine will host the MIAA women鈥檚 basketball tournament finals February 27 and 28 while Olivet will host the MIAA men鈥檚 basketball tournament finals February 27 and 28.
Indoor track and field teams
The men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 indoor track and field teams will compete at the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships February 27 and 28 at Trine University.
The women鈥檚 team is nationally ranked and defending MIAA indoor and outdoor champions. The Calvin men鈥檚 team is expected to contend for the league crown. The Knights are also pushing to send multiple qualifiers to the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships March 13 and 14 in Birmingham, Alabama.
Men鈥檚 volleyball
Led by first year head coach Aaron Sagraves, the men鈥檚 volleyball team has jumped out to a 10-2 start. The Knights have already surpassed last year鈥檚 win total and recently upset a Wittenberg University team that has received National Top 25 votes. Calvin is also 4-0 in the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL).
Hockey
The Calvin ACHA D1 hockey team took second in the GL6 regular season and also the GL6 Tournament. The Knights received a bid to the ACHA D1 National Tournament March 12-17 in Saint Louis, Missouri. Ranked #10 nationally, the Knights are 20-8-2 overall heading into national tournament play.
The Calvin ACHA D3 hockey team captured first place in the MCHC West Division and are in the semifinals of the MCHC Vezina Cup Semifinals. The Knights are ranked #1 in the nation and will compete at the ACHA D3 Tournament March 18-22 in Saint Louis, Missouri.
Lacrosse teams
Both of Calvin鈥檚 lacrosse teams are off to strong starts with the men鈥檚 team sitting at 2-0 on the young season while the women鈥檚 team is 3-2, having recently beaten 2025 NCAA III Tournament foe Grove City College.
Spring sports on the road for spring break
Calvin spring sports teams will travel south or west over spring break March 7-14. The men鈥檚 lacrosse team will travel to Colorado for non-conference games while the women鈥檚 lacrosse team, baseball team, softball team and men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 tennis teams will compete in Florida. The men鈥檚 golf team will spend spring break in Hilton Head, South Carolina with the women鈥檚 golf team spending spring break in Bradenton, Florida.
