Building Fires and Boiling Water: The Generosity and Expertise Powering Calvin's Infrastructure Renewal
When most people think about supporting a university, they imagine scholarships, new buildings, or classroom technology. Very few鈥痶hink鈥痑bout boilers鈥攖he unseen giants that quietly provide the heat鈥痥eeping鈥痵tudents, faculty, and staff comfortable throughout the year.鈥疊ut for鈥疛ohn Wiesehan, an accomplished engineer, entrepreneur, and founder of鈥Protherm Corporation, helping 青涩直播 modernize its heating infrastructure was the perfect fit.鈥
At鈥74鈥痽ears old, Wiesehan still brings the same energy and鈥痚xpertise鈥痶hat built Protherm into a national leader in steam generation, heat transfer, and energy conservation systems for industrial manufacturing plants. And in Calvin鈥檚 case, his generosity is helping rebuild two critical boilers at the university鈥檚 Science Building power plant鈥攅quipment that鈥痩iterally keeps鈥痶he campus running.鈥
鈥淭hese boilers run 24/7,鈥365 days鈥痑 year,鈥 said Brett Hoogewind, Calvin鈥檚 associate director of facilities for mechanical, energy management, and sustainability. 鈥淚f we lost one鈥攐r both鈥攊t would be devastating.鈥疶hey鈥檝e been in service for decades, and many of the parts are obsolete. John saw that and offered to help.鈥
What makes Wiesehan鈥檚 contribution remarkable鈥痠sn鈥檛鈥痡ust his financial support, but the depth of his personal involvement. After touring Calvin鈥檚 mechanical rooms and campus infrastructure, Wiesehan offered to design, fund, and help install custom-engineered components for the boilers鈥攊ncluding new burners and controls that will make the system more efficient and easier to鈥痬aintain.
Making a significant investment
鈥淗e designed everything,鈥 Hoogewind said. 鈥淭he burners were custom-made specifically for our system.鈥疕e鈥檚鈥痭ot just donating equipment鈥攈e鈥檚鈥痙onating his鈥痚xpertise, training our team, and walking us through every detail of the installation.鈥濃
The project, which began earlier this fall, will extend the life of Calvin鈥檚 boilers by decades, reducing natural gas and water use while improving reliability and safety. The new system includes advanced controls capable of self-diagnosing problems鈥攕aving time, money, and energy.
鈥淚f we had to replace the boilers entirely, we鈥檇 be looking at more than half a million dollars,鈥 said Hoogewind. 鈥淛ohn鈥檚 work is saving the university hundreds of thousands of dollars and setting us up for another 30 years of reliable heat and hot water.鈥
The why behind the work
Wiesehan鈥檚 connection to Calvin runs through his son, Chris, a Calvin graduate who spoke highly of his time at the university. That connection鈥攁nd a shared Christian commitment鈥攎otivated Wiesehan to give back in a uniquely practical way.鈥
鈥淗e鈥檚 one of those rare people who wants to help with the things no one else sees,鈥 Hoogewind said. 鈥淗e believes in the mission of Calvin and wants to make sure our facilities match the excellence happening in the classroom.鈥濃
Beyond the boilers, Wiesehan has already expressed interest in helping with future projects, including potential plans for a new power plant.鈥
鈥淛ohn is an engineer at heart,鈥 said Hoogewind. 鈥淗e鈥檚鈥痑lways thinking ahead.鈥疉fter we gave him a tour of our infrastructure, he called me one鈥疐riday鈥痭ight鈥痑nd said,鈥渓ooks鈥痩ike you need help with the elevators and the boilers. I鈥檒l take the boilers.鈥濃
Creating opportunities for students
The project also鈥痯rovides learning opportunities for Calvin鈥檚 engineering students. The facilities team has invited student groups to鈥痮bserve鈥痑nd learn from the renovation process - offering a real-world look at applied engineering, HVAC design, and sustainability.鈥
鈥淥ur students are passionate about energy conservation,鈥 Hoogewind said. 鈥淭his project lets them see how it happens behind the scenes - how thoughtful design and maintenance can make a huge difference.鈥
Serving with excellence, supporting sustainability
Providing quality service has been John鈥檚 philosophy. 鈥淏uilding fires and boiling water sounds like an ordinary mission and it is. But we succeed when we do ordinary things extraordinarily well. We provide our customers with energy-efficient durable operator-friendly equipment and control systems. We commission and service the equipment. We train our customers to operate it, provide their spare parts and give them our cell numbers to call any time. When the next project comes up, there isn鈥檛 much competition.鈥
As Calvin continues to invest in campus sustainability - from solar panels to geothermal systems - the boiler rebuild鈥痳epresents鈥痑 less visible but equally鈥痠mportant step鈥痶oward long-term energy efficiency and reliability.鈥
鈥淭his is a huge step forward,鈥 Hoogewind said. 鈥淲e鈥檒l鈥痷se less natural gas, less water, and have systems that are easier to鈥痬aintain. But most importantly, it shows what can happen when generosity meets鈥痚xpertise. John鈥檚 gift is keeping Calvin warm and helping us build a more sustainable future.鈥
